How Long Does a Bathroom, Kitchen or Basement Remodel Take?
On our recent projects, a master bathroom gut and rebuild took about 4 weeks, a kitchen or basement about 6 weeks, and a whole-home renovation 8 to 12 weeks. Those times run from the start of work to finish. Design and permitting come first, and how long they take depends on the project and on the town or county issuing the permit.
Timelines from our projects
| Project | Where | What we did | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basement bedroom to bathroom | Forsyth County | Converted a basement bedroom into a bathroom | 3 weeks |
| Master bath remodel | Suwanee | Master bath gut and rebuild | 4 weeks |
| Master bath and closet | Lawrenceville | Master bath and closet gut and rebuild | 4 weeks |
| Kitchen transformation | Alpharetta | 1990s kitchen opened up, custom cabinetry, quartz island | 6 weeks |
| Basement transformation | Braselton | Unfinished basement finished into an open entertaining space | 6 weeks |
| Whole-house renovation | Dacula | Whole-house gut and rebuild | 8 weeks |
| Whole-home renovation | Braselton | Whole-home gut and rebuild | 12 weeks |
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Our two most recent master bath gut and rebuilds, in Suwanee and Lawrenceville, each took about 4 weeks. Turning a basement bedroom into a new bathroom took 3 weeks.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
Our Alpharetta kitchen, a 1990s kitchen opened up with custom cabinetry and a quartz island, took 6 weeks.
How long does it take to finish a basement?
Finishing an unfinished basement in Braselton into an open entertaining space took 6 weeks.
Can you remodel a kitchen and bathroom at the same time?
Yes. Our whole-home projects in Dacula (8 weeks) and Braselton (12 weeks) covered several rooms at once. Doing them together keeps everything on one schedule with one contractor coordinating the trades; the trade-off is that more of the house is out of use at the same time.
What adds time
- Permits and inspections. Each stage waits on an inspection. In Buford, inspections requested by 4:00 PM are done the next business day; other offices schedule differently. See our remodeling permit guide.
- Septic approval in Jefferson. Adding or moving a bathroom on a septic lot needs Jackson County Environmental Health approval before the city issues the permit.
- Historic districts. In Jefferson’s four local historic districts, an exterior change needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Winder’s Historic District may need additional approvals.
- Changes after work starts. A new layout or a different finish partway through means re-planning, and sometimes a revised permit.
